We often get asked why rent when you can buy, we've highlighted items for your consideration in that decision below:
The average cost of equipment for utility type All Terrain vehicles in todays market place:
- ATV - $15,000 to $25,000
- SxS - $20,000 to $50,000
*Plus Freight, PDI & Warranty
Outfitting costs - Adding Winches, Cabins, Flags, storage boxs & other related safety equipment are often not included and have to be added on. Dealers will do so for an additional cost.
Budget approval - Approvals for these types of purchases generally go through capital acquisition budgets, whereas rentals can be managed in operational budgets and often fall within the monthly operating expense budgets.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Renting the equipment would reduce your up-front cost, allow more cost flexibility and can be 100% written off in the business at the time of rental vs having to amortize / depreciate a purchase over multiple years.
While some strong brands retain strong market value, the average piece of "all terrain" equipment such as an ATV or Side by Side equipment lose their value the minute you drive off the dealer lot
Warranty - Most manufacturers only provide 6 months to 1 year of warranty, after which the equipment is owned at owners risk.
Depreciation - The Equipment depreciates not necessarily based on its age in the first 3 to 5 years, however is much more impacted by the mileage or hours racked up. A unit under 5,000 kms tends to retain a fair market value. Once a piece of equipment exceeds 5,000 kms they tend to become a higher risk item in the market and the market price tends to reflect that.
Resale - Once ready for resale in the used market, the dealers tend to not be interested in a trade in and your best option is to sell to the private market. This will take time and resources to manage in your business.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - We absorb these costs and manage the resale market and ensure you have the best equipment available in the market for your purposes.
Trailers & ramps are often also required with the ownership of an ATV or Side by Side. The Trailers or loading accessories cost in todays market place:
- Trailers - $5,000 - $15,000
- Truck Decks - $2,500 -$7,500
- Ramps - $350 - $500
- Truck Bed Risers - $350 - $500
Trailer storage generally takes 3 to 5 times the amount of storage an ATV or SxS require.
Trailers require registration, Tire & lighting inspections, theft protection, and for larger trailers service to their brake systems.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Just grab one of our trailers or loading accessories for the duration of your rental. whether 1 unit or multiple units, we have options available for you.
Renting the equipment allows you to operate the equipment without a worry or consequences towards the potential maintenance implications.
While most people using equipment are respectful of the equipment, ownership of this type of equipment does see a level of general mishandling, both intentionally and unintentially when operated by anyone other than the direct owner themselves.
Some companies will instal costly GPS tracking units tracking how the equipment is being used which requires hardware and monthly service plans.
A damage monitoring program is recommened where units are used by multiple people. This will ensure any damages are identified and the employee or individual can be trained on equipment use and damages are kept to a minimum.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Operate the equipment without the worry of how its used, within a safe maner, and we will handle all the general maintenance requirements.
The most common "regular maintenance" items on ATV's & Side by Sides are:
- Oil, coolant & filter changes ($150)
- Brake services ($100)
- Tire patch & replacement ($100-$400)
- Major engine services ($2,000 - $4,000)
- Differential & drive train services ($100
- $250)
- Suspension and Steering parts ($50 to $1,500)
Major service intervals are,on average, every 100 hours or 1,500kms costing $1500-$3,000.
Complete engine overhauls are generally done between 3,000 to 5,000kms, costing $2,500 to $5,000, however is heavily dependant on the type of riding or abuse the equipment experiences over that time.
All items listed here only include the cost of parts, Labor will be extra.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - We ensure the equipment is operational and ready to go each and every time.
The nature of an "All Terrain Vehicle" is to usually operate on anything but a smooth road, and most likely operate in a dirt, mud, dust, rocky or snow type environment. This environment is hard on the equipment and is likely to cause down time if not maintained on a preventative basis.
From our experience, down time always seems to happen when the equipment is either heading out to the job or on the job, and its rarely at a convenient time.
When a repair is required, your team will have to take time away from their job to drive the unit into town, and unfortunately many of the local mechanics often book out 2 to 6 weeks out. Also, parts may not always be readily available or in stock.
Having a second piece of equipment available can alleviate this concern, however is not always feasible.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - We have multiple pieces of equipment available and will swap out the equipment right away. We will handle all logistics required to get equipment operating again while you focus on the job at hand.
Off Season - While the Canadian riding season is 6 to 8 months long depending on your riding focus, the equipment is generally stored for the other 4 to 6 months out of the year.
Day to Day - Not to mention, that does not include the storage requirements on a day to day basis during your riding season.
The storage generally requires that the equipment be kept in a secure manner and preferably inside to manage the longevity of the equipment.
Rodents - While nature follows us everywhere, Vermin and rodents can also create a small nightmare when it comes to electrical wiring damage, area's being filled with nuts and needles, which inadvertantly also create a fire hazard.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Call on the equipment as you need it, let us worry about the year round storage & pest control!
Insurance - Owning & Operating an All Terrain Vehicle requires an Automotive policy and it is highly recomenned to have corporate liability coverage specific to operating the ATV Equipment. These policies can be costly and add additional risk ratings to your insurance profile.
Registration - Off Highway Vehicles in Alberta must be registered and somehow they always expire right before you want to get use the equipment.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Having a rental coverage is often easier to obtain for companies as the equipment is only exposed for a defined period of time.
Securing equipment while stored or transported is always s good option.
Cost to secure while storing:
- Storage units / Shop space
- Security system - $600+ / year
- Property coverage on insurance policies
Cost to secure while transporting:
- Chains & Lock - $125
- GPS install & tracking - $450/year
- Automotive Theft coverage on insurance policies
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - pay one rental payment and we take care of the rest.
Outfitting the equipment with GPS, Fire-extinguishers, flags, beacons and more.
We provide our clients with all safety related equipment before the rental starts, including helmets, snow chains, GPS tracking, Fire Extinguishers, Flags, Beacons
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Calgary ATV Rentals provides most of these items free of charge.
Should there be a fire ban and your business or personal use is not exempted from the restriction, the equipment will be parked.
This has certainly been prevailing in our Alberta forestry climate in recent years and continues to be a real threat.
THE BENEFITS OF RENTING - Only pay for the equipment when you use it. If a job is delayed due to a fire ban, inclement weather or other uncontrollable events, we will work with you to re-arrange.
